The Nansledan Project is a large housing development on the outskirts of Newquay in Cornwall with the objectives of providing a sustainable high quality living environment in properties of mixed income households situated amongst work and leisure facilities.
One of the Project objectives is to source and use sustainable local or regional materials. UK based slate fits into this criteria very well. Cornish and Welsh slate are detailed on the build plans for the roofs because of their quality, performance, looks and sustainability credentials.
Wessex Slate and Tile Ltd are a local experienced roofing company with traditional roofing skills who fit into the vision of the project and are providing a consistent quality of roofing in keeping with the product itself.
The project is on-going and split into phases. We are 2 years into the current project phase. There are still a number of phases left to complete with the project set to go on for at least the next 10 years. The specification is mainly cold roof space with rafters under felt, batten and slates fixed in random width and diminishing courses. Sized slates are also used depending on availability. Logistically challenging due to the material shortages and constrictions. Maintaining the resources required on a long term basis whilst also servicing our other clients has also been a challenge, but one we have certainly been very happy to have! Technically we are very experienced on projects such as this so are able to provide the roofing skills necessary.
